I chose La Capra for the goat, in Italian. I was always very "goatlike" and got a lot of guff (not gruff) for it growing up. It was my goatiness that set me free. I also am a capricorn, and while I tend not to believe that stuff, I am told I am a classic capricorn (goatlike, I guess). Off to go chew up some bed sheets or something. PND is the worst, it's what keeps me coughing and with scratchy throat long after a cold has subsided. What they say about snorting warm salt water through the nose is gross but it works. I've found that it doesn't even have to be salt water, I have been known to snort the water up through my nose in the shower, if only to avoid a drippy, salty, snotty mess in the bathroom sink. Alternatively, I pour a couple of shots of brandy in a cup of boiling water, honey and lemon. After I drink that, I don't care if I have a little PND.... I've never tried a commercial rinse. Didn't know they were even out there. I'm going to try that next time I get plagued with PND. Hope you feel better soon. Shoshana

I could be wrong about this, but for some reason the following rationalization for this method of collecting donations could be any combination of the following: 1) "closed shop" unions that require everyone to join, or donate the dues to a non-profit via United Way (that is actually the ONLY allowed alternative donee in my employment contract). While joining the Labor Union is not WTBS prohibited per se, in some areas it is frowned upon. A JW might be similar frowned at for donating to UW, unless, of course, the money could be funnelled straight to WTBS, and 2) At my other job, there is quite a bit of pressure to "fill in those UW forms" with our deductions. To be allow R&F JWs to donate to their cult and still look magnanimous in the eyes of their colleagues directly benefits the coffers of WTBS. There was nothing in UW's statement of goals that would seem to preclude a JW from contibuting TO WBTS via UW in this way, since their cash can be designated. UW is, on one level, an organization to disperse donations to non-profits. If it were to exclude WBTS on grounds that it really does no "real" charitable work, it would run up against allegations of religious discrimination and the charge to eliminate support of Catholic Charities, or Jewish Community Resources, etc. The plus side is that if a person forgets to file her annual designation form, the donation is dispersed amongst ALL the charities, including those that help the "heathens." HOMEWORK AND KIDS?
by morty inis it me or....................do you think our children are being overwhelmed with all the extra homework they are recieving from school now?
i have 2 kids.
one being 15 and the other being 12. i just find that the homework load is so much, compared to when i went to school.i mean we are talking about at least 2 hours for my oldest son and 1-2 hours for the youngest.

I graduated from a typical suburban school district, following a typical college-prep program that met the requirements for admission into University of California, in 1986. Starting in fourth grade I had a little more than an hour, daily. In 6th through 8th it settled into at least two hours nightly, occasionaly three, but usuallly around two. Once I got to high school, I considered it a good night when I could get everything done in three hours, but five was more the norm, and that did not include preparing for quizzes, tests, and the ever looming SATs. Once I got into college, most of the literature, science and social science I took was a reiteration of what had been covered in my high school classes, only slightly more in .depth. However, if I had gone the GED route, I would not have met the admission requirements to that university. I think at some point in the 80s there was a push for homework across all the grades, that it was going to improve achievement over the long term. As a high school teacher, I am in amazement of how the clear majority of students are coerced into the same college prep path. Many don't have the interest, inclination, and even for some the innate ability. For three years they invest all sorts of effort, doing all this homework, taking all these classes, and just missing the mark to get the grades/SATs to get into those four-year schools. In California there is a trend to dupe kids into believing that college is for everyone, when it really is not. They lose a lot of the high school experience, get no practical skills, and can't get into college. Anyway, I assign homework that mostly can be finished in class, except in honors courses. No matter what I assign, though, those honors kids still get it done in class...(or the next class...) Shoshana

What a great reason to be labelled an apostate. What goes along with that label, of course, is the implication that you commit all the other sins that they rag on and on about,so I guess you better get busy sinning! Shunning doesn't have to be a two way street, in fact, it is a far more an enjoyable sport when one actively engages in a heavy offense game of anti-shunning. Shoshana

Low Meeting Attendance Means Wrongdoing!

..and that this was directly related to whether or not there was any secret wrondoing within the congregation that was "blocking the spirit" and thereby restricting the "increase"?.

In my congregation, after a disfellowshipping, attendance at meetings ALWAYS picked up. I think it was because something juicy had finally happened, giving people something to talk about, speculate on and entertain themselves with. The meetings were temporarily dramatic (I almost said more dramatic, but that would have implied that there had been a prior element of drama...)Shoshana

Caffeine addiction

I am a hardcore coffee drinker. I can cut back, but my intake always creeps back up to too much. When I do want to cut back, I switch over to tea (like Lipton), that relieves the caffeine withdrawal, and I find it less jarring to lower the tea intake over the course of a few weeks. Then I switch back to one or two cups of coffee a day (as opposesd to 8 or 9). Right now I am in the two to three cups a day range. I love coffee. I started drinking it when I was about 5. I would never want to give it up entirely, unless it became a serious health matter. Shoshana

Well, if you were to "get caught," it would have to be by two others that witness it. And what were they doing there anyway? It sounds to me that so long as you keep your eyes open and don't say "amen" after any prayers, you are in the clear (but be careful not to "think" amen). Smaller cities are tricky. Just don't advertise your presence, slip in, celebrate, slip out. (once again saved by the two witness rule.) Shoshana

When one does not "honor" one's parents, one runs the risk of getting cut out of the will. Of this, I am sure, the WTBS is frightfully aware. There is a financial incentive for the WTBS to remind its readers to maintain good familial relationships with potential benefactors. Or am I just looking at this from too pecuniary an angle? has in place needs it's eyes and ears to find out whether or not a congregation is following all the rules that the wt has laid out for it.
